The authors of several modern baby books recommend many different methods for infant massage, some of which are illustrated with elaborate diagrams and employ magical oils and unguents. I suggest you keep it simple. Everybody enjoys a little rubdown, but Lucy may wonder what’s going on when you start chanting mantras amid exotic scents. Also, as idyllic as your massage is, it may lead to sensory overload and more fussiness in an already overstimulated newborn with a cranky disposition.
Short of this scenario, newborn massage, i.e., touching and caressing Lucy gently, is sweet. You may even be doing it now without realizing. As for the illustrations, if you’re like me and don’t get them, make up your own technique.
